A member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, Peggy Crombie's artistic journey began in Melbourne, where she was born in 1901. Her formal art education commenced at Stott's Commercial Art Training Institute in 1921, followed by a significant period of study at the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne from 1922 to 1928. During her time there, she was under the tutelage of prominent artists such as Lindsay Bernard Hall, William Beckwith McInnes, and George Bell.
 

Crombie's artistic ventures extended beyond her educational years, as she actively participated in exhibitions with various modernist groups in Melbourne. Notably, she showcased her work with The Embryos, the 1932 Group, the New Art Club, the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, and the Victorian Artists Society, contributing her unique vision to the vibrant artistic scene of her time.
