Ethel Stephens visited Europe in the early 1920s at a time of great flux in the art world with the emergence of modernism. However, like her teacher Julian Ashton, she dismissed this art movement vehemently and adopted a more traditional post-impressionistic style. This is evident in her depiction of the Pantheon presented here, with similarities in colouration and brushstrokes to the more well-known compatriot Ethel Carrick Fox.
